Pearl of Wisdom Number 15 - My Favourite Self Care Tips For Traveling

Do you find that your self care rituals self destruct when you travel?

Whether it's a trip to the beach or a trip around the world, travel can often lead to you dropping the ball on your self care routine and that my friend can have some sour consequences.

If you're nodding your head in agreement or are planning a trip soon then getting wise on how to practice self care while you're away from home will help and our recent trip to Toronto gave me the chance to really focus in on this too.

So here are some of my favourite self care tips for travelling:

  • Focus in on the micro moments — this one is inspired by Suzy Reading and it helps you to keep your perspective. When your day to day is disrupted by travel or you find yourself in new surroundings you can easily forget to do the things you would normally do to take care of your wellbeing. Finding the time for self care when waiting for a train/plane can feel impossible and then you can be stuck in a hotel room or a relatives house and it feels difficult or unrealistic to continue your exercise routine, eat well, meditate or jut relax in a bath. This is the time to grab at those micro moments of self care, this could be listening to a favourite song, reading a book spraying on scent that smells uplifting. Think about how else you can experience those micro moments?

  • Keep a journal — when you travel having a small notebook and pen in your bag can really help. It gives you a chance to express all your feelings (no matter what they are!) and have a dedicated space to focus on yourself. Remember to express a bit of gratitude too by jotting down the things you feel went well or was a positive experience for you each day.

  • Pack wisely — I'm not talking about a capsule wardrobe here, although in my opinion this is a smart thing to do, especially if you're going to be away for more than a few days (you can find some inspiration from Travel Fashion Girl on holiday capsule wardrobes here if you're interested this one from CocoMamaStyle if your packing for kids). This is more about bring with you a few beloved items that encourage you to create self care moments or continue a self care practice, for example your workout wear so you can still exercise, a travel candle that you can light to meditate with or some really nice and indulgent toiletries so you can take some time to have a nice bath or treat your skin to a nice, moisturising scent. I always pack a few crystals, a luxury body moisturiser, a note book and pen and something to read.
  • Music please! — A really nice way to keep yourself lifted when traveling is creating a soundtrack. Load your phone, iPod or MP3 player (do people still use these?!) with your favourite songs, make sure they're ones that keep you inspired or boosted. Alternatively you could listen to podcasts or audio books too.
